The New Materials Department is currently conducting research and
development of the classic, yet new material Zinc Oxide (ZnO) as well as
producing ZnO related products. Zinc oxide is an oxidized metal (zinc)
as its name suggests, that has been used in pigments, piezoelectric devices,
and varistors.
|
|
| Recently, research in UV and white LEDs and laser diodes using wide-bandgap
energy ZnO is widely conducted, but great advances have not been achieved
because high-quality, single-crystal ZnO for superior epitaxial layers
is not yet available. |
|
| Tokyo Denpa has successfully grown the ZnO single crystal by hydrothermal
method that has been matured for synthetic quartz crystal.Since a 2-inch
size ZnO wafer can be sliced from the grown single crystal, significant
development of ZnO device is expected. |
|
| ■Major applications and merits of ZnO |
| * Homo-epitaxy substrate for ZnO UV-LEDs or UV-LDs…Perfect lattice match, High efficiency UV-LEDs or UV-LDs |
| * Hetero-epitaxy substrate for GaN devices…High lattice match, Large non-polar
face (m-plane) |
| * Radiation sensors (scintillator)…Fast decay time (less than 1[nsec]) |
| * UV sensors…High sensitivity to only UV wavelengths (not sensitive to
visible wavelengths) |
| * Piezoelectric devices…Large piezoelectric constant, Working at high
temperature (a maximum of 500 degrees C) |
